The YM-YWHA of North Jersey’s 7th and 8th Grade Basketball All Stars Play Valiantly Versus Japanese All Stars

Ten players from the Y’s traveling youth basketball program represented the YM-YWHA in a JrNBA/JrWNBA sponsored event on January 5, 2008. The team was made up of players from the Cavaliers and the Corsairs, they were coached by Rich Karamian and Bart Lancia the head coaches of both the Cavaliers and Corsairs.

Our players faced a seasoned and determined All Star team from the Japanese JrNBA/JrWNBA Program. The team that Japan sent this year could definitely compete with most public High Schools in the area. Our team took the court after some nice games of chance and skills competitions that the NBA and the New Jersey Nets staff conducted. We hung tough in the first half and played much stingier on defense than our New York counterparts, in the second half the height advantage and depth of the Japanese team started to take their toll on the scoreboard. We were successful in holding the Japanese All Stars to under 100 points. Our coaches and players conducted themselves with the utmost in sportsmanship and showed amazing grace under pressure. The players were given their uniforms, t-shirt, goodie bags, and a commemorative trophy for their efforts.

Families were treated to a great lunch and several of our Junior Varsity players were given a guided tour of the Nets training facility.

The physical Education department wishes to express sincere gratitude to Eric DiMicelli of the NBA Community Relations Department for the wonderful experience and great opportunity for the players and their families to enjoy a special event at the Nets Training Facility.
