General Information
The JCC Maccabi games are the most recent offspring of a proud tradition of Jewish amateur sports. The Maccabi movement was founded in 1895 when the first all-Jewish sports club was organized and in 1932 the first Maccabiah Games were held. The World Maccabiah Games have been held every four years in Israel as a two-week international competition, and have consistently attracted the elite Jewish athlete, many of whom have achieved fame in the Olympics; most notably Mark Spitz, Mitch Gaylord, Ernie Grunfeld and Brad Gilbert.

The concept of the JCC Maccabi Games has existed for many years in Israel, Europe and South America. In 1982, the Jewish Community Centers Association of North America began the Maccabi Games in the United States. At this Jewish Olympic style event, each athlete has the chance to participate in one of the sports offered and events spanning the week-long experience, creating memories that will last a lifetime. The JCC Maccabi Games can be called the Olympics for Jewish Teens, but they serve a larger purpose than athletic competition. The Games also promote community involvement, teamwork, and pride in being Jewish. The Games are the largest Jewish teen event in the world-each summer, teens from around the US and the world, participate in the Games. Over 100,000 teens have benefited from the JCC Maccabi Games since 1982. The energy and excitement make it a unique and unforgettable experience for every participant, from athletes to volunteers, from coaches to host families.

The JCC Maccabi Games are made possible with the generous help of many sponsors and volunteers who donate time and valuable resources, including our continental sponsor, The Coca-Cola Company.

World War II Paterson/North Jersey YM-YWHA Connection

In 1926 eight young men organized a club and called themselves, "The Panthers". Initially they held their meetings at a member’s home but as the club took in more members they began to meet at the Paterson YM-YWHA. These young men formed a bond that lasted throughout their adolescent lives right up until World War II. In addition to their prominence in athletics, especially in basketball and baseball, The Panthers held an annual variety show that was usually sold out. Today there are few alive from that group. One is long-time "Y" member and former member of the Board of Directors, Sam Zakim. Also included are Lou Sirota, newly inducted into the "Y"’s Sports Hall of Fame, Joe Rich who resides in Florida, and Cookie Fisherman also believed to be residing in Florida. Another outstanding member of the Panthers and also a "Y" Sports Hall of Fame inductee, now deceased, Morris Pressman. There was even a Junior Panther Club that functioned for a few years during World War II. Stanley Blake, another long-time "Y" member was an active member of the Jr. Panthers.

Most of the Panthers went off to serve their country during WWII and all came home except one, Jack Pikula, who lost his life in battle. Following the war, the Panthers wanted to memorialize Jack Pikula in some meaningful way. They consulted with then physical director, Mort Rittenberg (1927-47) and together they developed the Jack Pikula 1000-point decathlon indoor competition for teenaged "Y" boys. Points for first, second and third places would be awarded, the first one reaching 1000 points would be the winner. The names of each year’s winner would be inscribed on a new "Jack Pikula" Trophy

The first winner in 1946 was Charles "Chuck" Wisotsky, a "Y" member since 1942. "Chuck" arrives at the "Y" every day around 3:30, has a cup of coffee in the Tel Aviv Café, engages in conversation with whoever comes into the Café, then goes to the gym for his daily workout. A few years ago the Trophy was discovered in the basement of the "Y". It was polished to its almost original brilliance and put on display in the athletic office along with other trophies.

Shown holding the Jack Pikula Trophy is Charles "Chuck" Wisotsky.

Walk for Steven Domalewski – June 1, 2008

The YM-YWHA of North Jersey would like to extend our thank-you to everyone that that assisted in any capacity to help make this year’s walk a success. We had a total of 216 walkers, our current tabulations are $15,360.00 in combined monetary and goods donated to benefit Steven and his family.   Everyone who came out to walk and support Steven and those who gave donations to support his recovery efforts have our heart felt thanks and sincere gratitude for a job well done. Thank you.

For those of you who wish to purchase T-shirts in honor of the Walk for Steven, we have over 300 shirts to sell at a minimum donation of $10.00. Please contact John Kerr at 973-595-0100 x279.

A Walk For Steven 2
June 1st, 2008 Rifle Camp Park West Paterson, New Jersey. It is 75 degrees and sunny with a slight breeze. The prefect day to take a walk in the mountains, if you are able to walk. For 2 years Steven Domalewski has not been able to walk, that is why 216 supporters with the help of 40 volunteers walked on his behalf. To date; the Walk has raised a total of $15,700.00 in goods and monetary donations. Donation request letters have been submitted to the areas 11 major professional sports franchises in an effort to secure matching funds for this year and future walks. The Physical Education Department has nearly 300 commemorative shirts available for a minimum donation of $10.00. Please help us add to the already very generous total raised for our 2nd annual Walk. The crowd that assembled on June 1st was treated to a surprise announcement by former mayor and New Jersey State assemblyman Scott Rumana. Scott revealed that he was sponsoring a bill to ban aluminum bats in the State of New Jersey. The Walk was also attended by Congressman Bill Pascrell Jr. and Current Mayor Chris Vergano; both addressed the crowd before the ribbon cutting ceremony, which was conducted by the YM-YWHA’s President, SuBonnie Kochman, and Executive Director, Steve Allen. A special guest in attendance for all the young walkers was “Truman” the mascot for Kidsville News. All participants were treated to a picture with Shrek and a commemorative key chain from Beesley Event Photographers. In addition to the pictures the walkers were energized for the second year in a row by the fruit infused water donated and served by Jim Pescatore of O Beverages. The Physical Education Department also wishes to thank the generous donations of several local companies that helped to keep all the walkers hydrated and nourished.

Sunrise Bagels, Costco, A&P,Stop and Shop, Sam’s Bagels, Starbucks Coffee, Trader Joe’s

A very pleasant addition to the walk this year was the presence of the equine therapists from “Wings of Dreams”. All of the therapists, who attended the walk work out of the Garrett Mountain Equestrian Center, located in the Garrett Mountain Reservation, West Paterson, NJ. Some of the funds raised have already been dedicated for the purchase of special saddles to aid in the administration of corrective posture therapy. Our walker’s generous donations will not only help Steven Domalewski with his equestrian therapy but, countless other children that the “Wings of Dreams” angels assist. I would like to thank everyone that donated, walked, volunteered, and or assisted in any way to make our 2nd Walk a great event. I would horribly remiss if I did not mention a special thank you for the tireless efforts of my co-chairperson and Assistant Executive Director of the YM-YWHA, Joyce Fein. Together with Brian Barakat and Roxanne Wasserman, this triumvirate formed the most dedicated team any fund raising project could ask for. The three amigos have my sincere gratitude. We still have unfinished business. One day soon Steven will walk with us!

YM-YWHA of North Jersey Hall of Fame Inducts 3 New Members and Gives Special Award

On a beautiful Sunday morning on March 9th in the Senior Lounge, the room was filled with 4 long time Y families, as 3 deserving individuals were inducted into the Y’s Sports Hall of Fame, including our first female recipient. A special award was given out as well. The Hall of Fame Committee chaired by Board member, Marty Rittenberg, set certain criteria for inclusion into this exclusive club, and 3 people were chosen for induction. After opening greetings from Y president, SuBonnie Kochman, and Y Executive Director, Steve Allen, a special award was presented by John Kerr, the Y’s Director of Health Phys. Ed. and Recreation, to Shirley Grower and family, in honor of her late husband, Lou "Red" Grower for his long time commitment to the Y.

Chairman Rittenberg then proceeded to induct the 3 recipients starting with the Y’s first female recipient, Barbara Kiel. After very witty remarks by her husband, Milton , Barbara spoke and thanked the Y for this great honor, based on her impressive accomplishments in squash from the local Y level to the National level of competition. Next came the presentation for inductee Willie Dimond, graciously received by his nephew, Dr Howard Schwartz, who thanked the Y for its recognition of his uncle who recently passed away.
Dr Schwartz said that his uncle’s favorite times were spent at the Y and speaking at home with his family about his friends and experiences at the Y.

Finally, Marty inducted long time member Lou Sirota, whose 2 sons, David and Rick, accepted on behalf of their dad who was unable to make the trip up from Florida. They read a beautiful letter written by their dad to the Y that had everyone in tears as he described is years at the Y and how he met his wife of 65 years here at a basketball game. A basketball teammate of Lou’s, David Ebner, raveled here for the ceremony as he read about it in the local paper somehow and had to be present. They played basketball together at Paterson State Teachers College (now William Paterson University) in the late 1930’s.

The crowd of over 50 people thoroughly enjoyed the nostalgic and thrilling morning ceremony, and it was great to see the resurrection of this committee and the awards handed out. Thank you again to Marty Rittenberg and his entire Hall of Fame Committee for a great day at the Y. May there be many more to come.
