| GENERATION
TEXT AUTHOR SPEAKS AT THE Y
Dr.
Michael Osit, clinical psychologist and author of a
new book Generation Text: Raising Well-Adjusted
Kids in an Age of Instant Everything enlightened
those who attended his presentation and book signing
on September 25 at the Y, about the prevalence of
this growing phenomenon. “Parents have a unique
challenge in raising their children in this
fast-paced, push button-immediate gratification
culture. Now, more than ever, parents must equip
their kids with good decision-making and problem
solving skills to help them navigate through the
technological bombardment of social messages, media
influence, and internet access.” Pictures during the
presentation of young people walking around with not
one, but two cell phones in their hands, or falling
asleep with their thumb on the “send” button has
become today’s reality!
Every
month I share a “Parenting Pointer”, a simple quote,
with all of our Crite readers. This month, I am also
sharing Dr. Osit’s final words in his book with you.
They are powerful, enlightening and oh, so true!
“You
have the ability to help your child grow up to be a
remarkable adult. Being a parent is the most
important job anyone can undertake. As proud as I am
to have helped countless families in my work as a
psychologist, my biggest joy derives from my job as
a parent to my three children. With all my formal
degrees, my phenomenal training by the most talented
mentors, and thirty-plus years of experience working
in mental health, my most valuable training has been
provided by my own children. That is my final
message to you, as a parent. Using your children as
teachers and as a purpose, learn how to express love
and caring for one another. Be respectful and honest
in your relationships. Always act with integrity and
humility. Accept your children and others for who
they are are, not what they achieve or own. Allow
your children to elevate you to a higher standard so
that they can do the same for themselves and, in
turn, their children.”
Remember, we CAN make a difference. |

COMEDY COMES BACK TO THE Y
It
isn’t summer at the YM-YWHA of North Jersey anymore
without its Comedy Under the Stars event, which was
held on Saturday July 26th this year! It was the Y’s
fourth open mic nite and once again, it was an
outstanding evening filled with good food and great
laughs. It was like being in a New York comedy club,
with the audience being entertained by NINE amateur
and professional comedians, except there was no
bridge toll and no traffic!
Matt
Liebman was once again the MC and featured
entertainment, including his popular routine about
traveling through the state of Delaware. The
audience was introduced to a range of talent, from
those who have been in the industry for years to a
local engineer and Y member, Paul C. Beck who tried
out his jokes and stories for the very first time!
All of the other comics ---Craig Sharf, Ed Pudup,
Kai Gilletti, Chuck Jagoda, Mark Normand and Daniel
Mintz --have worked in clubs such as the Laugh
Factory, Catch a Rising Star, Improv, and Rascals,
and are all aspiring to “make it big” in the world
of comedy. The YM-YWHA of North Jersey has truly
become another popular venue for our comics and both
the entertainers and the audience look forward to
each event! Comedy Under the Stars will be back in
the winter for another open mic nite with a little
bit of a different twist, so watch for details!
