Koei-KAN "Y" Karate - Do

Koei-Kan is an original style of Japanese Karate. In the Koei-Kan system the individual is stressed, and each student is taught to strive for the highest degree of self-attainment. The practice of Koei-Kan Karate-Do develops good health, self-defense, mental awareness and ultimately self-confidence, discipline, and self-reliance.  From young adults and athletes looking for a challenging workout, to seniors looking for a fun and fascinating way to rejuvenate themselves and improve their quality of life, Koei-Kan Karate-Do provides something for everyone!

Karate for Kids and Teens
The self-image, self-confidence, self-discipline, and self-control your child develops will determine the level of happiness and success he or she will be allowed to experience as an adult. Martial Arts can aid your child in developing all of the above qualities and more leading to a healthier, happier, and more successful life. Sensei Miller-Feinstein can help your child attain:

  • Leadership Skills
  • Respect for Others
  • Increased Concentration Coordination and Dexterity
  • Goal Setting and Achievement

Martial Arts training also gives children something gravely needed in today’s world, the strength not only to say “NO” to drugs and to negative, potentially harmful peer pressure, but to also back up their words with action. Our young students become leaders of their peer groups. The Martial Arts offers your child many benefits that are critically needed in today’s world.

Karate for Adults
Our classes are geared for you to start training at any time. That time is now! If you have wondered what karate training is like, or you long to get back to it again, the time is now! Our workouts will challenge your mind and body. As you sweat during the aerobics, your movements will have purpose to improve you physically, mentally and defensively. And to cool your body down you’ll learn the rhythmic movements of kata, the flowing forms of koei-kan.

Karate is a way of life, join today and begin a better way of life.

Meet Chief Instructor Sensei Lee A. Miller- Feinstein
Sensei Miller-Feinstein has been training for over 38 years. She is the only female to ever obtain the rank of Rokudan in the Koei-Kan International Karate System, which is practiced in six countries. Her certification comes directly from the Koei-Kan Karate-Do founder and master, Kancho Eizo Onishi who resides in Japan.

She is a six-time International Champion in Kata (forms), Kobudo (weapons), and Kumite (fighting). She was a number-one-ranked competitor in the Tri-State Area for more than 20 years. Among her other accomplishments, she holds the honor of being the first female in her karate system to achieve the ranks of 2nd through 6th degree black belt; she is on the New Jersey Koei-Kan Karate-Do Board of Directors, and, has served as the Koei-Kan International Tournament Director over the past few years. She has taught in the West Milford Koei-Kan Karate-Do School, the West Milford adult/children continuing education programs and in Wayne Nursing Homes for rehabilitation and self-defense of the elderly.

On a college level, she has taught karate at Montclair State, William Paterson, Fairleigh Dickerson, and Upsala. She served as the secretary, treasurer and President of the New Jersey Karate-Federation, a State Organization founded to support the efforts of the United States National Karate-Do Federation (U.S.A.-N.K.F.) the leading organization of Traditional Karate for the Olympic games. She holds a 3rd degree black belt rank with this Federation as well as being the highest ranked Kumite (sparring) and Kata (forms) judge in the State of New Jersey, under the U.S.A.- N.K.F. organization. She never stops in her quest to learn and know more about the martial arts.

Sensei M. Skawinski
Sensei Mark Skawinski has been training for over 30 years in Koei-Kan Karate-Do, a traditional Japanese karate system which is practiced internationally, flourishing in six countries. He earned the rank of Yondon (4th degree black belt) with his certification coming directly from the Koei-Kan Karate-Do founder and master, Kancho Eizo Onishi, who resides in Japan. Sensei Skawinski is the only individual to win the Koei-Kan Karate-Do All-Around Tournament Championship by placing first in all five events: kata, weapons, sparring, individual full-contact sparring and team full-contact sparring.

Skawinski began training in Koei-Kan Karate-Do at a young age and he continues to learn under the guidance of Sensei Brian Frost, the U.S.A. Technical/Administrative Director of the Koei-Kan system, and with the assistance of Sensei Feinstein. In addition to teaching Koei-Kan at the “Y”, Sensei Skawinski has been giving demonstrations and classes to less fortunate children over the past few years.

As an impressive bonus, Sensei Skawinski brings more than just karate instruction to the “Y” Koei-Kan Karate Club. As a natural competitor, he achieved the title of All State Hockey Player in his teenage years. Staying physically fit for hockey led to his background in weight lifting and bodybuilding.

With a love for individual one-on-one competition, he entered into the rings of Pro-Boxing. It wasn’t long before he was making new records for himself. He was a two-time runner-up in the Golden Gloves and at the Diamond Gloves level his knockouts averaged only sixteen seconds to execute.

As an adult, Sensei Skawinski continued his love for competition and entered back into the karate tournament circuits, accumulating more than twenty-five USA Titles and eight International Titles before his retirement from the rings. He leaves behind him a legacy that challenges all who follow in his footsteps.

News from the Martial Arts at the YM-YWHA of North Jersey

Congratulations to Grace Blake, the first student from the Y Karate Club to achieve the rank/grade of Shodan (first level Black Belt). Grace has been studying Koei-Kan Karate-Do, a Japanese form of Martial Arts, at the Y for the past 5 years. She is a true example of the Koei-Kan mottos, everyone starts at the bottom, everyone sweats, and every belt is earned.

International Koei-Kan Karate Championships Kick-Off in Wayne

Bleachers were packed and spectators overflowed the gymnasium at the YM-YWHA on 1 Pike Drive, Wayne, New Jersey on May 4, 2008. Why all the excitement? Koei-Kan Karate practitioners from across the United State and abroad gathered there for the ultimate competition of the 36th Annual Koei-Kan International Karate Tournament.

According to the Tournament Director and host, Sensei L.A. Miller-Feinstein, more than 150 competitors, ages five to over seventy, vied for the championship in their respective divisions of kata (forms), kumite (sparring), weapons and bugu (full contact fighting). Excited cheers could be heard throughout the day, escalating to a resounding roar when Team Bogu took the center ring at midday. Team Bogu is full contact fighting between teams of fighters, representing their home state. Team Washington, the defending champions, was the first to go down when some of their team members could not make it to the finals. Team Pennsylvania battled hard against Team California with California ultimately claiming that victory. The crowd went wild when Team New Jersey defeated Team Pennsylvania, and then proceeded to face-off against Team California. After almost two hours of team competition, California’s hard-hitters won the title.

As the day wound down, it was evident that many would be back next year to enjoy banquets and seminars, to defend their titles and exhibit their skills, to meet with friends and to participate in one of the largest on-going single-family traditional karate tournaments that is run in the United States.

For more information or to become a member of the YM-YWHA Koei-Kan Karate Club contact Sensei L.A. Miller-Feinstein at (973) 595-0100 ext. 224.
